Within the study of management is the examination of leadership.
A topic that is continually debated over, what is true leadership? How can one define it?
Regardless of definition, I want to share with you some traits derived from quotes from great leaders that have inspired me to serve others better and motivate myself to push harder towards my goals.
Value: 1 - Motivate a vision
#1 “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” - John Quincy Adams
#2 "Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality." - Warren G. Bennis
#3 "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." - William Arthur Ward
Leadership is a platform that can be used to encourage and enable others towards their full potential in both a team and individual setting. Being able to turn dreams to plans then fulfil them is as important, if not more important, then realising the dreams themselves. The goal is not simply to boss people with directives, but rather give them the tools to create things for themselves.
Value: 2 - Face your fears
#4 "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you think you cannot do." - Eleanor Roosevelt
#5 "If you want to catch your dreams, you have to drop your fears." - Anton Rubaclini
#6 "I'm not afraid of storms, for I'm learning how to sail my ship." - Lousia May Alcott
To have fear is to have a roadblock stopping you from making progress moving forward. To remove that fear is to take a step to a better future. As a leader, this is critical as through improved self-efficacy there is nothing you cannot do.
Value: 3 - Put others first, always
#7 "The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there." - John Buchan
#8 "You manage things, you lead people." Grace Murray Hopper
#9 "Leadership is unlocking people's potential to become better." - Bill Bradley
To micro-manage is to be a boss, but to put others and their needs first is to be a leader. As a leader, one of the most important things to remember is that it is never about you, it is about you serving others around you. When this is your focal point, incredible change will happen.
Value: 4 - Take action
#10 "The most effective way to do it, is to do it." - Amelia Earheart
True leadership is done through action. Anyone can have the knowledge and a plan, but to carry this out is what sets you apart from the rest. It doesn't matter about the time, money or people behind you, what does matter is your integrity to carry out what you set to achieve and doing it to the best of your ability. In summary, what are some of my highly valued traits in a leader?
1. Motivate a vision
2. Face your fears
3. Put others first, always
4. Take action
