Shincheonji Volunteers: How to love your neighbours?

Shinchoenji Volunteer Group's activities largely follow the kaupapa / ethos of 'Love Your Neighbours' as commanded by Jesus.

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group has been operating for over 30 years since its establishment in 1984.

They cover a large variety of events and have a strong focus on these 6 main volunteer initiatives:

Medical volunteering service for foreign laborers in South Korea
Mural paintings
Events for veterans
Culture and welfare support for the elderly
Lunch pack donations to the marginalized people
Environmental cleaning

One of the most recent ways the carried was orientated around 'Pink Lunch Bags' and 'Visiting Doctor'.

The full article can be read here but in summary these two activities were aimed at protecting Human Rights, providing for foreign neighbours who are without medical care, and providing lunch to local neighbours who don't have finance for food.

The group struggled initially to find people in these brackets and when they did, their work was put down. The linked article above describes how the public offices didn't provide status of socially neglected classes of their regions. Now, however, the organisation has a growing reputation for their hard work and service.

Again, the reason and drive of these actions are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus who commanded us to love our neighbours.

Mark 12:30-31 New International Version (NIV)Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

To see from afar what the Shincheonji Volunteer Group is doing in Korea is a real encouragement of how a church is putting their faith into action and living life in obedience to the words of Jesus.

Their number is growing rapidly and I look forward to seeing how they love their neighbours in the coming months, but also consider myself how I will do the same.

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group is setting an unprecedented example in what it looks like to carry out a life of faith according to the Bible and it is evident that what the volunteer group is doing is making a marvelous change in the world.
