Whakapapa: Adam and Eve

Introduction of People in the Bible

WHAKAPAPA | GENEALOGY #1 : Adam + Eve [Gen 1-3]

At the beginning of the 6,000 years of Gods history, God created the Garden of Eden in the east and dwelt there.
Before we break down the content of these chapters and understand who Adam and Eve were, it is important that we recognise that Genesis is not just a book of history, it is something deeper. Genesis 1 doesn’t record the creation of the physical Heaven and Earth, but the spiritual Heaven and Earth which are expressed through figuative explanations, through examples in the natural world for us to understand. If we were to read this chapter literally, we would be confused and frustrated by the contradictions that it has in a natural sense. Furthermore, there is scientific evidence that points to the world being over 1 billion years old with most scholars saying that Earths first life forms only existed 3.8 million years ago. With this evidence proved by geologists and biologists, this wouldn’t make sense and would infer that all these evidences are mere lies.

When we read the story of Genesis 1, it unpacks the 6 day process God took to create the Heaven and the Earth. First animals are created, then man. Genesis 2 describes Adam and the Garden of Eden. This may seem confusing, but Gn 2:19 says that God brought the animals he had already created to Adam. It doesn’t mean that God first created Adam and then the animals, Genesis 1 and 2 are in chronological order.

The second point to highlight here is the question often asked. Was Adam the man was the first man that was created? -- and the answer to that is no. The evidence can be found in Gn 4:13-14 where Cain, Adams son, was afraid other people would try and kill him. Another example of this is Gn 2:24 where it is implied that Adam has parents through God telling him to leave his parents and unite with his wife.

Continuing on, when we read Genesis 2, it specifically outlines the process of the creation of man. The creation described in a more in detail story of regarding the work that went on during the 6th day in Genesis 1. And so we come to the Garden of Eden and the main featured character who we commonly know as Adam.

What was Garden of Eden?
The Garden of Eden was the creation made by God. It was made first before man in the east and contained the following:
- The Tree of Life
- The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
- A river that seperated into four head waters
- The serpant

Where was the Garden of Eden?
The four rivers that flow from the Garden are the Pishon, the Gihon, the Hiddekel, and the Euphrates. The Hiddekel and the Euphrates are can be found near the Persian Gulf which is between the modern day Saudi Arabia and Iran, however, the location of the Pison and Gihon is still unknown.

Who was Adam and how was he created?
Adam was the first man, created by the dust of the earth. God breathed the breath of life in him so that God could be with him. Through the breath of life, God’s Word of Life, he became the first living being, the first man acknowledged by God.
When the breath of life was breathed in Adam, his spirit became living. Since Adams spirit was alive he was able to communicate with God as Gods word was the food that gave him life.

What was Adams duty?
Adam was given the task of overseeing the governance of the Garden of Eden and naming the creatures that dwelt there, he was the pastor of that generation.

Gods Covenant with Adam
God then established his covenant with him: he mustn’t eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or he will surely die. This was the Word that was entrusted to him that he was to keep.

Adam’s wife, Eve.
Among all that lived in the Garden, there was no suitable helper found for Adam. God saw that he was lonely, and caused Adam to fall into his sleep. During his slumber, he took one of the mans ribs and made a woman. God gave Eve to Adam and they became one, united in Gods words. They didn’t reveal each others faults which refers to them being naked without being shameful.

The Serpant
Within the Garden of Eden was a serpent who decieved both Adam and Eve through a series of events. The serpant approached Eve and questioned her, “Did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden?”. Who was this serpant? Rv 20:12 says that the ancient serpant is synonymous with the dragon, the devil and Satan, so we know that the serpant was Satan.

The Fall
Eve had desire in her heart and this led to the sin of disobedience to Gods covenant (Jms 1:15), and she ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Eve saw that the fruit was good and pleasing to the eye so she took some to Adam and they both ate it. When they ate it, their eyes were opened and they saw their nakedness so they sewed fig leaves for themselves and hid.

Result of their Sin
God was walking in the Garden but because Adam and Eve were ashamed they remaining in their hiding. It was revealed to God what had happened and Eve said “the serpent deceived me, and I ate” (Gn 3:13). Following from this God cursed the serpent, Eve and Adam for breaking the covenant. They knew the Word that was given and should have obeyed but due to deception, corruption got a foothold and begun to infuiltrate the world.
As a result of all of this, Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden and God blocked the entrance to the Garden with an angel with a flaming sword. He was banished after he was decieved by Satan and God also left that place.

Bible Lifestyle

Across the globe today are lifestyles that are sweeping through in health, fitness, and mindfulness to name a few. One, however, that has remained for over thousands of years is one designed by God, known today as the Bible Life Style.

included in the video is the scripture Psalm 1:1-3 which reads as follows:

Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

As a believer taking this onboard I'd like to encourage you to tackle your week with this lifestyle. By taking the time to seek first God in all that you do, he will provide the things that we need to guide us to a new and deeper understanding. By meditating day and night on Gods Word, the Bible tells us that what we do will prosper.

How do I put this into action?

Great question! Here's a couple of ideas to get into the Bible LifeStyle - see what works best for you and let me know, I'd love to hear any new ideas:

- Spend the first 30 mins of your day reading through the Bible
- Read a chapter of Proverbs a day (there's 31 so that's a months readings)
- Buddy up with a friend and read through the gospels together
- Reflect through the Psalms reading one per day
- Download a Bible App and get notifications for a verse of the day to remind you of Gods grace through out the day.

34th Anniversary of Shincheonji

On the 14th of March, members of Shincheonji celebrated the 34th Anniversary by gathering in Jamsil Dorm Stadium in South Korea. Over 20,000 people gathered to share in this celebration including leaders from all 12 tribes of the church. Chairman Lee preached on the fundamental values of the church and the type of faith walk a believer should practice before God.

Going back to its roots in the 80s, Shincheonji Church of Jesus Christ started with humble beginnings in a temple of Bisan Dong in An-Yang city in 1984. The main emphasis as a church body is to centre your life of faith around the Bible while nurturing members to be guided along this as a moral compass to live by.

The church teaches the contents of the Bible with a special focus on the prophecies written in Revelation. Growth has been explosive, seeing a rise of 1,666% since the time it was founded to now where there are 135 branch churches in 19 countries across the globe.

To spread their doctrine, the church has opened up theological wānanga by the name of "Zion Christian Mission Centre". First starting in 1990, these centres have expanded to 400 nationally and internationally. The church also has websites in Korean and English with materials to educate believers and gives other content such as doctrine comparison.

Alongside this, Shincheonji has a strong focus on loving your neighbours. Fast forward to 2003, Shincheonji opened up a volunteer organisation which has been transforming the social culture in South Korea as well as helping a variety otāngata.

Shincheonji's Open Invite

I could describe the most beautiful house to you using many eloquent words and tell a story of majesty. In the same way I could use my words to tell a different story of that same house but with harsh dialogue and speech. However, the only way for you to really understand this whare would be for you to see it with your own eyes

Using this analogy, we can understand that conflict can arise due to a breakdown in communication, where two parties are on different pages on the same topic. Having the kōrero is critical to not only seeing face to face but also in being eye to eye.

Once a year, Shincheonji hosts an "Open House" event where they invite the public to come into their church. This year, people were invited in with the kaupapa of getting to know the church for what it is - without the veil of exaggerations, just simply as it is.

Throughout the year Shincheonji spends time investing in the community and shining their light as a church through local activities such as community outreach, Bible seminars, and promotional days. The increase of promotional days is to increase the public perception to the true reality of the church rather than what they are perceived and falsely persecuted due to misunderstanding. Consider yourself - would you prefer assumptions made from your character based off of rumor and speculation or to be judged objectively?

Being able to keep up online with what Shincheonji is doing and it's work encourages me to live out my life of faith in a way that truly honours God. Following the news of well thought out community work targeted at individuals that are marginalized in society, people who don't have necessary access to governmental help, and those who wish to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Bible spurs me on. I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Shincheonji and what events they put together in the months to come.

But please, don't just take my word for it - read it for yourself and decide. For the full article, have a read of what was posted on Seoul News:

Shincheonji Volunteers: How to love your neighbours?

Shinchoenji Volunteer Group's activities largely follow the kaupapa / ethos of 'Love Your Neighbours' as commanded by Jesus.
The Shincheonji Volunteer Group has been operating for over 30 years since its establishment in 1984.

They cover a large variety of events and have a strong focus on these 6 main volunteer initiatives:

  1. Medical volunteering service for foreign laborers in South Korea
  2. Mural paintings
  3. Events for veterans
  4. Culture and welfare support for the elderly
  5. Lunch pack donations to the marginalized people
  6. Environmental cleaning

For more context, this is what they got up to in the year 2016:

One of the most recent ways the carried was orientated around 'Pink Lunch Bags' and 'Visiting Doctor'.

The full article can be read here but in summary these two activities were aimed at protecting Human Rights, providing for foreign neighbours who are without medical care, and providing lunch to local neighbours who don't have finance for food.

The group struggled initially to find people in these brackets and when they did, their work was put down. The linked article above describes how the public offices didn't provide status of socially neglected classes of their regions. Now, however, the organisation has a growing reputation for their hard work and service.

Again, the reason and drive of these actions are to follow in the footsteps of Jesus who commanded us to love our neighbours.

Mark 12:30-31 New International Version (NIV)Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

To see from afar what the Shincheonji Volunteer Group is doing in Korea is a real encouragement of how a church is putting their faith into action and living life in obedience to the words of Jesus.

Their number is growing rapidly and I look forward to seeing how they love their neighbours in the coming months, but also consider myself how I will do the same.

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group is setting an unprecedented example in what it looks like to carry out a life of faith according to the Bible and it is evident that what the volunteer group is doing is making a marvelous change in the world.

3/14: The Most Important Birthday

Faith has always been an important part of my life. Whether it being the acknowledgement of wairua and mauri in my surroundings, striving to be more in the image of Christ, or receiving grace through reading the words of the Bible, Church is something that is dear and precious to me.

I am a congregation member of Shincheonji Church of Jesus Christ, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, or in short 'SCJ'. SCJ is a place to call home with a true family. As those unified by God and sharing one Word and one common purpose, I thoroughly enjoy being able to carry out my walk of faith with like-minded believers without bias, prejudice or discrimination. Above all these things, what I love the most is the scriptural evidence that Shincheonji is built upon, providing a strong and stable foundation for ones faithwalk.

Established on the 14th of March 1984, Shincheonji is the nation of God - otherwise known in English as New Heaven New Earth (NHNE) and signifies the new tabernacle and new saints (2 Pt 3:13; Mt. 13:31-32; Rev 14:1-5; Rev 15:2-5).

2,000 years ago Jesus came and God dwelt with him (Mt 3:16). At the time of the first coming, Jesus said that there would be one who came in his name who would teach all things, the Spirit of Truth, a Counselor (Jn 16:26, 16:14-15). The person whom the Counselor is with is the pastor promised at the time of the second coming in Revelation and also the one who overcomes (Rv 2-3, 10).

Something that holds my heart dearly is the way that Shincheonji celebrates with an intricately beautiful culture. On this note, one of the exciting things that is happening this week is the Live Broadcasting of 34th Anniversary Service of Shincheonji Church of Jesus.

Don't want to miss out? Why don't you get on the action with us as we celebrate and listen to the Words of the promised pastor?

But, why is this important? What makes it so precious and valuable?

For a majority of my life in my walk of faith, I felt like I was wondering in the woods without knowing where I was going...

What was my direction in life?
Where did God want me to go?
How could I use what I have for his kingdom?

These questions rattled me.

I cried out to God for answers and it wasn't until I myself studied the theology of Shincheonji, that I grew to a correct understanding of the scriptures, and now I get to be part of the best gathering for God - Shincheonji's 34th birthday!

Amongst all this is the exponential growth that Shincheonji is experiencing, it is undoubtedly a well watered tree that is bearing many wonderful fruits - and I definitely don't doubt that this trend of going onwards and upwards will stop any time soon.
